Improving the energy performance of existing housing

Scottish Housing Quality Standard: Energy Efficiency
It has been estimated that about 24 million homes in the UK that exist now or are built before 2016 will still exist in 2050.

Reducing carbon emissions from existing housing is therefore key to achieving carbon dioxide emission reduction targets.

Useful resources

A number of useful resources are available to help you reduce emissions from existing housing. These include:

Reducing Emissions from Social Housing

Our free online guide is a comprehensive source of information for social housing management organisations. Endorsed by the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations (SFHA), the guide aims to provide all the information you require to develop and implement a strategy to improve the energy efficiency of your housing stock.

Homes Energy Efficiency Database (HEED)

HEED is a national database that tracks the sustainable energy characteristics of the UK housing stock. It contains information on over 10,000 homes (42% of the UK housing stock). It is also the central register for Energy Performance Certificates in Scotland.

Sustainable refurbishment: Towards an 80% reduction in CO2 emissions, water efficiency, waste reduction and climate change adaptation

This guide, developed by the Energy Saving Trust's Housing programme, outlines an integrated package of measures that will enable builders, developers and householders to hit the UK Government's demanding target to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 80%. A number of other technical guides are also available from the Housing Programme; search our publications database here.

Guidance on meeting the energy efficiency requirements of the Scottish Housing Quality Standard

All Scottish social housing must meet key energy efficiency criteria by 2015 under the Scottish Housing Quality Standard. Our guidance includes information on what these requirements are, advice on improvements in different property types, and practical examples and case studies.

Private sector landlords booklet

The private rented sector tends to have the lowest levels of energy efficiency across all housing. In light of this, the Energy Saving Trust has produced a leaflet that you can distribute to private landlords on your register to inform them about support available to them. You can see a pdf of this document on our private sector landlords page.

T-ZERO

T-ZERO is a free web-based tool that identifies the optimal insulation, heating and renewable options for any given house, based on your budget and refurbishment goals. The T-ZERO marketplace is also a useful source of information about suppliers and installers of the recommended measures.
