In recent research, we spoke to organisations of all sizes in both the public and private sectors, and in a range of industries. We wanted to gauge the importance they attach to the environmental impact of their fleet and how they are addressing the issue.
The results are intriguing. Most notably, over 80% of respondent believe it is ‘quite’ or ‘very important’ that organisations are concerned with the environmental impact of their fleet but only about a quarter say they’re doing a lot to make it happen. There’s just as much of a gap for organisations that say they want employees to drive fuel-efficient vehicles, as those that ensure they actually do.
Other key findings from the research:
Reducing carbon emissions and cutting costs is the biggest incentive for bridging the Green Gap. That’s good news all round.
Some of the most common ways respondents said they liked to keep a check on costs is by using only one or two manufacturers (57 per cent of respondents do this) or providing drivers with fuel cards (54 per cent). Whilst these are effective methods, organisations could go further – by monitoring the number of miles driven, teaching employees smarter driving techniques, for example. And fleets could be reviewed more regularly. A quarter of respondents leave between three and five years before conducting a review, which means they could miss considerable savings.
One barrier to running more environmentally friendly vehicles is the attitude of managing directors. More than a quarter say that their MD doesn’t believe that greener fleets are important – a surprising result, given the significant savings their businesses could make.
Fleet managers have a positive attitude though:
| The Green Gap statistics | % for whom it is "very important" | % who are doing "a lot" to address it |
| Fleets should use the most fuel-efficient cars available. | 57% | 24% |
| Fleet vehicles adhere to the strictest environmental standards. | 44% | 16% |
| Organisations are concerned with the environmental impact of their fleet. | 51% | 37% |
| Organisations provide training on driving in an eco-friendly way. | 32% | 13% |
| Company car drivers should spend only the time they really need on the road, and no more. | 53% | 28% |
| Organisations should use the new car CO2 emission bands in their choice of vehicle. | 60% | 36% |
| Organisations should do their best in acting to reduce the environmental impact of their fleet. | 60% | 27% |
| All vehicles in the fleet are low-emitting (i.e. under 130g/km for passenger cars) | 29% | 11% |
| Organisations encourage their fleet drivers to use public transport wherever possible. | 20% | 18% |
