Homes are '40 per cent more efficient'

06 February 2010

A spokesman for the Communities and Local Government has claimed that homes built today are "40 per cent more energy efficient compared to 2002".

He added that despite this, more needs to be done to improve energy efficiency in homes and reduce the nation's carbon output.

The spokesman explained: "The government is already taking action in terms of retrofitting existing buildings, improving future design standards and cutting red tape in the planning system for the installation of green energy solutions."

Building green homes can involve using natural low carbon properties, such as clay and timber.

Products like these will cut the carbon emissions of the overall construction because they require lower carbon production methods and produce less waste.

In addition to natural materials, sourcing labour and construction supplies from close to the site will help to reduce emissions generated through transport.

Buildings account for almost half of the UK's carbon emissions, according to the government, making them an important target for reductions.
