Free insulation 'would save Scotland £728m per year'

13 January 2009

Proposals from the Scottish Greens to provide all Scottish homes with free insulation would help households save on their energy bills.

Even assuming gas bills do not rise, which they did twice last year, at the end of the ten-year programme of insulating homes, the savings on energy bills would add up to £782 million a year, claim the Greens.

And Patrick Harvie, co-convener of the Scottish Greens, claims the £100 million- a year programme would have other benefits.

He told the Herald: "We are faced with an unprecedented dual crisis, both economic and environmental, and this proposal is one way ministers could make a real difference to both at the same time."

Insulating a home reduces the amount of heat it loses and thereby reduces the amount of energy it takes to keep it warm.

The Energy Saving Trust recommends insulating lofts to a depth of 270 millimetres.
